DISTINGUISHED FACULTY
PURPOSE
In March 2000, the SRA International Board approved in principle a proposal to develop a "Distinguished Faculty" designation. The designation is not an "honorary" award for service to SRA International or a "lifetime" achievement award. Rather, "Distinguished Faculty" is meant to serve the following purposes:
- To recognize the outstanding expertise of SRA International members to the formation of the body of knowledge required by professional research administrators;
- To recognize the importance of a body of theoretical as well as practical knowledge for an individual to be a professional research administrator;
- To recognize individual SRA International members who are:
-
Outstanding teachers;
-
Outstanding researchers or exemplar professionals in the field of research administration;
-
Have published theoretical and practical contributions in professional and scholarly, peer-reviewed journals;
-
To create a "Distinguished Faculty," recognized by SRA International, who may:
-
Be called on as expert consultants or speakers by universities, hospitals, not-for-profit research organizations, and industry and government research laboratories, and administrative authorities to present professional workshops, educational courses and professional development programs;
-
Be called on as expert "faculty" to instruct for-credit educational courses or programs (e.g., MPA, MBA, Ph.D.)
-
Be called on as expert researchers to conduct external, periodic and professional reviews of research administration capacity and processes within organizations, at the request of the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS OF DISTINGUISHED FACULTY
Individuals who may wish to seek a Distinguished Faculty designation through SRA International should:
- Be a member in good standing with SRA International;
- Show completion of an accredited undergraduate program, such as a B.A., B.S., B.B.A., B.Comm., or equivalent;
- Have a minimum of five years experience in research administration at a university or other post-secondary educational setting, hospital, not-for-profit research organization, industry research laboratory or government research laboratory;
- Have demonstrated theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of research administration and/or a sub-field or research administration;
- Be recognized by other scholars and practitioners in the field as knowledge experts; and
- Have demonstrated quality instructional skills.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT
Individuals who are designated "Distinguished Faculty" will be so named for a period of three years, beginning at the SRA Annual Meeting in October, and are renewable upon application and demonstration of on-going commitment to the profession and contributions to the body of knowledge.

SRA ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In its July 2005 meeting, the Board of Directors transferred management responsibility for the nomination, review and selection of Distinguished Faculty from the Board to the Education and Professional Development Committee.
-
Nomination
The Education and Professional Development Committee promotes the nomination or application of Distinguished Faculty candidates and establishes the process and timeline for securing said nominations.
-
Committee Review and Recommendations
The Education and Professional Development Committee convenes a group of individuals, many of them Distinguished Faculty, to review all nominations and applications received and submits its recommendations for appointment of one or more candidates from the pool of nominees and applicants to the Board of Directors for their review and selection. The Education and Professional Development Committee may recommend that none of the candidates be appointed Distinguished Faculty.
-
Selection and Communication
The Board of Directors selects Distinguished Faculty from among the recommendations it receives from the Education and Professional Development Committee. The President of SRA International will inform all applicants or nominees of the Board's decision. Individuals who are not designated "Distinguished Faculty" may re-apply or be re-nominated, and may respond to any issues that may have been expressed with regard to the individual's qualifications for the designation of "Distinguished Faculty." Additionally, the Board will report to the SRA membership the appointment of Distinguished Faculty. Such a report may be at the Annual Meeting of SRA International and/or through SRA eNews or the SRA website.
APPEALS
Candidates may appeal the decision of the Executive Committee to the Board of Directors. Appeals will be considered on procedural grounds only. The decision of the Board of Directors is final.
RENEWAL OF DESIGNATION
Applicants for renewal must demonstrate on-going commitment to the profession of research administration, on-going contributions to the theoretical and practical understanding of the field of research administration through the delivery of workshops, conference presentations and/or publications in professional or scholarly journals. This will be shown through submission of an annual report of scholarly and professional activities.
