The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access Policy requires that peer-reviewed publications from investigators who are funded by NIH grants be made publicly available within one year after publication. The NIH has developed mechanisms and provided tools to investigators to verify compliance with the policy. The long awaited 2016 Compliance Supplement was released at the beginning of August, 2016, allowing us to finally review and digest the new Part 6 – Internal Controls section. As many of you know, the Uniform Guidance has a large focus on internal controls, and the new Audit Requirement in Subpart F applies to fiscal years that started December 26, 2014 or later, so many of us are only recently seeing the effects of the internal controls standards on our Single Audits.... As part of NSF’s efforts to modernize proposal submission and increase competitive fairness in the proposal process, the Foundation continues to focus on implementing automated proposal compliance checks in FastLane. Effective September 26, 2016, FastLane will now check to ensure that the combined text of the Project Summary text boxes does not exceed one page prior to submission, rather than the current check of 4,600 characters....
