Greetings from the Northeast!

by William F. Hoffman, Jr. on Thursday, March 30, 2017

As we begin to thaw out from the many snowstorms and ice storms that have ravaged our Section recently, I want everyone to think for a moment of pristine sandy beaches, warm ocean breezes, a luau and wonderful ocean views. You can have all of these things, plus a fabulous professional development and educational experience, at the combined Northeast/Western Section Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii, from April 2-5, 2017 (this is less than 2 days away)….sounds fantastic, right?? Please reference the Hawaii Meeting Catalyst article for more specific details.  I realize that this is a long trip for the Northeast….but trust me, a great meeting in Paradise is worth the plane ride!!  Let’s prove the nay-sayers wrong and have an enormous Northeast turn-out at this meeting. The Planning Committee is working very hard to ensure this will be a meeting to remember.  NIH, NSF, Henry Jackson and the Gates Foundation will all be in attendance (in person) - no webinars at this meeting!! Please consider joining us and register as soon as you can. I know you will be glad that you came.

The Northeast Officer elections began on March 6, 2017. We have two outstanding candidates running for President-elect: Cindy Morin from The Johns Hopkins University and Debbie Pettitt from NIH. Surekha Vishwasrao, from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, is running unopposed for the Section Treasurer position. I am so grateful to the candidates who are volunteering their time and effort to run and keep the Northeast Section a great and vibrant Section. Please vote in this election.

Finally, I just want to say what an honor it is to serve as your President. I am humbled and appreciative for all of the support and kind words the Northeast members have given me. I am so proud that the Northeast has 3 very active Chapters that are doing great educational and professional development meetings, as well.  I would like to challenge all Northeast members to become more actively involved in SRAI, whether it is assisting at a registration table, being a Room Monitor, serving on a Planning Committee, being a SRAI Ambassador, serving on a SRAI Committee, or running for an office. We need everyone’s support and ideas to flourish. If anyone has any concerns or ideas that they wish to share with me, please call me or send me an e-mail.

Hope to see everyone on April 2 in Honolulu.

Aloha & kindest regards,
Bill Hoffman
